What are the dangers of an alcohol detox?
It is possible to detox alone; however, it is not always ideal and not recommended, in fact we would strongly advise against detoxing from alcohol whilst alone (in all cases medical advice should be sought). Complications may arise at any time based on the substance used and the person’s existing physical and mental health. Also, intense cravings and other significant discomforts may arise during the withdrawal process, weakening the resolve to quit and potentially contributing to the risk of relapse. At Regain we strongly recommend that people needing Detox should strongly consider a medically managed detox. The process of withdrawal can result in a wide variety of symptoms that, depending on the drug and the individual, may include:
- Insomnia or hypersomnia
- Nausea and vomiting
- Diarrhoea and other gastrointestinal distress
- Appetite changes
- Irritability and agitation
- Strong drug cravings
Medical detox may be better able to manage and treat symptoms such as these as they present – making the process as safe and comfortable as possible.
