Detoxification

What are the dangers of alcohol detox?

As discussed previously, going ‘cold turkey‘ or to suddenly stop drinking alcohol can cause serious ‘alcohol withdrawal symptoms’ if you had been drinking heavily for some time.

Complications may arise at any time based on the amount of the substance being used, and the person’s existing physical and mental health. Also, intense cravings and other significant discomforts may arise during the withdrawal process, weakening the resolve to quit and potentially contributing to the risk of relapse. At Regain Recovery we strongly recommend that people requiring Detox should undergo a medically managed detox. The process of withdrawal can result in a wide variety of symptoms that, depending on the individual, may include:

  • Insomnia or hypersomnia
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhoea and other gastrointestinal distress
  • Appetite changes
  • Irritability and agitation
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Strong drug cravings
  • Pain
  • Disorientation
  • Seizure

A medical detox will better manage and treat symptoms such as those mentioned above as they present – making the process as safe and comfortable as possible.
